Summary

In this chapter, you learned how to create page layouts in SharePoint Designer. You also learned about the relevance of page layout and publishing content types and the role they play in creating and provisioning page layouts to SharePoint site collections. In addition, you learned about how page layouts work with master pages and how you can override content placeholders and navigation to affect appearance on a page layout basis.

The chapter also showed you how to detach existing publishing pages from a page layout and pointed out the pros and cons around doing so. You learned how to extend page layouts by integrating custom CSS to add print functionality and background images.
