Physical Location of Default Site Templates (Site Definitions)
As part of the SharePoint installation process, default site templates and associated files are installed under the SharePoint system folder. In SharePoint Server 2007, the system folder was referred to as the 12 Hive. In SharePoint 2010, the system folder is referred to as the 14 Hive. Default site templates are installed in the 14 Hive under the SiteTemplates folder, located on the Web front-end server at %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates
