Pages and URL Structure

Depending on the page type you choose will also determine the URL structure throughout your site and site collections. For instance, if you choose publishing pages as the default page type, then the URL structure will appear as http://sitename/pages/pagename.aspx

The ‘pages’ parameter in the URL represents the container in the site where publishing pages are stored, known as the Pages library. Some have suggested removing the ‘pages’ parameter by using a technique called URL rewriting. But you should be aware that this practice is not supported by Microsoft and you may run into issues around functionality and when attempting to upgrade.
