Vanity URLs: Host Headers for Site Collections

SharePoint 2010 has introduced support for vanity URLs, or host headers, for site collections. The concept of using host headers in SharePoint deployments is by no means new. Host headers could also be configured in SharePoint 2007, but they were limited to Web application level and could not be configured at site collection level. The introduction of support for site collection host headers takes the onus off creating additional Web applications purely to achieve unique URLs.
