Getting Good Estimates

Guesswork is the more candid name for estimating, but important project decisions hinge on guesses being good. Project stakeholders care deeply about financial measures like return on investment, cash flow, payback period, and so on. Because time is money, the time you estimate for project work translates into the financial measures that make or break your project. Too-high and too-low estimates of time—and therefore costs—can both jeopardize a project, albeit for different reasons, as the box below explains.
