When used without Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Outlook 2013 stores your data—including all of your default and custom folders—in a personal folder file, or PST file. When used with Exchange, your mailbox resides on the server rather than on your computer. When you open Outlook, the program contacts the server to display your data.
