How it works...

For the various ASR supported scenarios, you can run planned or unplanned failover operations, depending on the supported infrastructure.

In general, when you initiate a failover, ASR runs a prerequisite check to ensure that all conditions for failover are met:

  • ASR creates the VMs in the target resource group, a target virtual network (for failover to Azure), target subnet, and target availability set.
  • ASR then processes the data and makes it ready so that an Azure VM can be created from it. Based on the selected recovery point, ASR will either revert the VM to the latest recovery point or process all the data and provide the lowest RPO.
  • Optionally, ASR could shut down the source VM before it triggers a failover.
