Choosing a Content Deployment Strategy

While we have observed many recent discussions of perceived weaknesses of the current iteration of content deployment, many of these comments seem to be products of a lack of understanding about what the process is designed to accomplish and when it is needed. The key word in understanding the process is content. Content deployment does not deploy any features, functionality, or code—only content from the content database. While it does require the publishing infrastructure feature to be activated for a site collection for its functionality, it will deploy both publishing and collaborative content if the templates for the containers are available on the destination site collection.
