Peer-to-Peer Video Endpoint Requirements
In the “H.264 Video” section, it was mentioned that Lync 2013 video requires more processing power on the endpoints for HD video. Although this is true, Microsoft has also introduced the capability for hardware-accelerated encoding and decoding. Hardware acceleration is the use of a graphical processing unit (GPU) for encoding and decoding of video. Rather than using the software and the primary CPU, this processing load can be offloaded to the GPU chip. Hardware-accelerated video encoding and decoding is available on many modern platforms. This can be included in processors, graphics cards, and even USB webcams. Microsoft supports the following types of hardware acceleration in Lync 2013:
