A popular shift in desktop deployment has been the concept of virtual desktops or using host servers to provide virtual machines for desktop users, which are accessed through some kind of thin client.

The issue with many of these deployments is a lack of media support. Because Lync clients operate as a softphone, there is a dependency on local speakers, microphones, and video cameras to use many of the media conferencing features. Even if thin clients have these hardware items installed, most desktop virtualization software does not support mapping to them or passing these devices through to a virtual machine running in a datacenter.
