Versions and Licensing

Lync Server, much like OCS 2007, comes in two flavors: Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition. The two versions give companies the option to create relatively simple or fairly complex topologies based on their needs and budgets. Features between the two are fairly similar, with Enterprise focusing on providing high availability and disaster recovery options that aren’t available in the Standard Edition. Similarly, Enterprise Edition requires the higher-end components; for example, a dedicated SQL server is needed rather than a local SQL Express, which is what Standard requires.
