If an application is hosted on IIS 7.0 and considered a critical component of business operations, one technique for providing fault tolerance is load balancing. Certain load balancing solutions provide fault tolerance at the TCP/IP level—that is, if the entire machine fails, the load balancing cluster no longer sends requests to that system. However, application failures are not recognized, so client requests will still be sent to the affected server.
