8. Step 5: Determine Fault Tolerance for the Infrastructure

This section addresses the fault tolerance options available to the organization. Planners can reference the information recorded Step 2 to determine the most suitable availability option for each application. As each application is evaluated, record the fault tolerance configuration in Appendix A: "Job Aid 2: Application Inventory."

In addition to ensuring fault tolerance of servers and storage, it is critical to ensure that infrastructure services such as DNS, backbone connectivity, and routing are designed for fault tolerance as well. This will help ensure that IIS 7.0 applications remain available to clients regardless of single failures in the network infrastructure.
