Option 2: Remote File Shares

With this option, configuration or content data is stored on remote file shares, which can be hosted on remote file servers or on a network-attached storage system. Using remote file shares provides the following advantages for both configuration and content:

  • Administration. Administration is simplified by having multiple servers pull information from a single location. However, there may be a risk if corrupt or inaccurate configuration data is created and used by multiple machines.

  • Simplified backup. A central location allows for a simplified backup strategy, because only one storage location must be taken into consideration for the IIS 7.0 instance.
