Option 2: Server Core Installation

The other Windows Server 2008 installation option is the Server Core installation, which gives organizations a new choice for running compact and specialized Windows Server 2008 installations:

  • Compact environment. The Server Core installation option installs only those features that a particular role requires (for example, a domain controller or Web server). Installing only necessary features and files needed to support a specific role creates a smaller attack surface, and fewer features to patch results in reduced maintenance.

  • No GUI. This option does not provide a GUI on the local servers. All local management is performed in a command prompt window.
