B: Collecting Performance Data

When characterizing applications, keep in mind their unique natures. Each application will have its own specific resource utilization profile and other factors that make up its footprint. Each application can be monitored in a reference production environment or in a preproduction environment, or it can be tested in a lab. The goal of this kind of testing and monitoring is to gather meaningful data that can then be used to properly plan and allocate resources.

For each application, record the following requirements in Appendix A: "Job Aid 2: Application Inventory":

  • CPU resources

  • Memory

  • Network bandwidth

  • Disk space

Include information from sources such as:

  • Similar applications or technologies.
