Natural Language Formulas

Excel's Natural Language Formulas feature enables you to write formulas using references automatically derived from the column or row headings for cells.

For example, the formula in Figure 35 references the cells immediately to the right of the cells containing the text Sales and Cost. Excel can recognize the text as labels or names for the cells beside them, thus allowing it to understand the formula =Sales-Cost.

Tips

  • Although the names feature has been part of Excel for years, Excel's ability to recognize names without you manually defining or creating them was added in Excel 98. I tell you more about names in Chapter 13.

  • If you enter an incorrect name reference in a formula, one of two things happens:
