The quest for an RIA environment is the result of the inherent limitations of the AJAX approach. AJAX solves many issues and can definitely make for smoother and better received Web applications. AJAX, however, is based on HTML and JavaScript. The difference between a classic Web (plus AJAX) application and an RIA is found in the quality and capabilities of the user interface and the programming power.
