Most attentive developers in the community have been developing around interactive and highly responsive Web technologies since the late 1990s. So both AJAX and Silverlight are not brand new ideas. Indirect evidence of this statement is the fact that all real technologies behind AJAX, and even the plug-in technology behind Silverlight, are nothing new.
