Indexes can be defined for tables to significantly accelerate searching and sorting. The advantages of greater processing speed and improved data reading performance are offset, however, by increased administration time and greater use of disk space.
Chapter 19, “SQL Server Tools,” describes index analysis by the Microsoft SQL Server Query Analyzer, as well as the Index Tuning Wizard for the SQL Server Profiler. You can use these tools to check your indexes and generate proposals for new indexes using the actual data used in the SQL Server/MSDE.
