CHAPTER 12Bottoms Up!

Irecently completed a presentation to a major corporation. During the question-and-answer segment, one of the senior managers put me on the spot. We were walking through ways to make the group’s new awareness of the language of micromessages pay off in the workplace, and he said, “Frankly, I have no interest in leveling the playing field. The field is the field and it’s up to the individual to make his or her own career.” He seemed to have been holding back his opinion during the presentation and finally saw the opportunity to let it all out. “On the real field of play, athletes compete and the best person wins. We don’t adjust anything and that’s the way it works best.”

For some reason, he thought we were on opposing sides ...
