Chapter 20

Practice of Micro Compression

Abstract

In this chapter, the practice of micro compression of pure copper using the desk-top servo-press machine is introduced. Micro compression tests with assistance of laser heating are conducted to study the influences of temperature in micro compression. Specimens with various grain sizes and different cylindrical diameters are used to investigate the effects of feature size on the material response. Laser heating is found to be an effective method to heat the workpiece so that micro compression process can be performed at elevated temperatures. With grain refinement and thermal activation, it is possible to reduce inhomogeneous flow, leading to improvement in the edge quality of the deformed parts ...
