The purpose of training isn't just about disseminating knowledge and building mastery of it; it's also and more importantly about building competency to perform and enabling performance across changing contexts. As learners begin their journey from novice to expert, their learning and performance support needs to change. Success comes from matching the support to specific and changing needs. The author defines five categories of needs, or moments in the journey to competency, as a means of identifying the full range and types of appropriate support.
