Moving toward urban sustainability: using lessons and legacies of the past

W.D. Solecki,     City University of New York, USA

Abstract:

This chapter attempts to root the current striving for urban sustainability within the broader spectrum of urban environment change and how cities have responded to past challenges. A primary focus is how reaction to environmental crises results in transitions and transformations that in turn result in legacy effects in cities which have implications for their future development trajectory. These conditions are illustrated by an examination of conditions in New York City and selected other examples.
