Metropolitan effects on atmospheric patterns: important scales

P.M. Klein,     University of Oklahoma, USA

Abstract:

With the ongoing trend of urbanization, metropolitan areas continue to grow worldwide and urban land use/land cover changes influence atmospheric patterns at various spatial scales. The atmospheric quantities affected are primarily temperature, wind and precipitation, but the emission rates and emission densities of various gases and aerosols are also much higher in cities. Changes in atmospheric patterns occur within cities and surrounding rural environments, while urban impacts on global scales have recently also received attention.
