Setting Up a Vulnerable Windows XP Installation

To run the examples in this book, you will need to install a licensed copy of Windows XP on a virtualization platform such as VMware. After you have completed the installation, log in as Administrator, open the Control Panel, switch to Classic View, and choose Windows Firewall. Select Off and click OK. (This may seem unrealistic, but this scenario is more common than you might imagine in large corporations.)

Next, open Automatic Updates and select Turn off Automatic Updates; then click OK. You don’t want Windows to patch vulnerabilities as you’re trying to learn how to exploit them.
