4.6 SUMMARY

We have discussed several of the problems that flow directly from the application of strict metamodelling, particularly in the context of the integration of product and process modelling. We have elaborated the notions of linguistic metamodelling versus ontological metamodelling and observed that, in some modelling languages, the confounding of these two styles of metamodelling often leads to problems, misapplication of metamodelling theory and general misunderstandings about the role and utility of metamodels and metamodelling – we have illustrated this argument with examples from the current literature.
