1. Getting Started

iBooks, Apple’s free e-book reader for the iPad, supports textbooks in addition to standard EPUB-format e-books. Unlike EPUB books, which are basically pages of flowing text and static images (like most Web pages), textbooks include normal text interspersed with interactive high-quality images, sounds, videos, animations, and 3D objects. Apple has recruited academic publishers to create textbooks and sell them through Apple’s iBookstore (available through iBooks on your iPad or in the iTunes Store on your computer). You can view a gallery of titles on Apple’s Web site or in the Textbooks category of the iBookstore (Figure 1.1).
