Application Scenarios and Deployment Domains
Chapters 3 to 8 gave details about the underlying technologies that together constitute the format-agnostic media approach. In these chapters, significant technological advances have been described compared to the state-of-the art in production, delivery, rendering of, and interactivity with, live audio-visual media, as described in Chapter 2. We argue that this new approach of format-agnostic media allows content to be produced in a more flexible way, better suiting the interests of the viewer and the capabilities of their device. However, the introduction of new technology is driven by the articulation of end user demand and their willingness to accept these new technologies, as well as the logical fit of these technologies within the domains where they will typically be deployed. Hence, it is worth considering how the approach of format-agnostic media can be introduced into existing production, delivery and device domains. Studying the techniques that underlie the approach through a variety of application scenarios and use cases helps to better understand their added value as well as their impact on the respective deployment ...
