4.1 Introduction

Over recent years the rapidly changing broadcast landscape has led to a new set of issues and opportunities for audio developments in the audio-visual broadcast chain. Foremost among the drivers for change are ever-developing user requirements and consequent changes in reproduction systems and delivery formats. Current industry practice is proving insufficient or inefficient in meeting the demand for new and improved services across the full range of audio-visual consumption from traditional push based television broadcast and large screen events to video on demand (VOD) and interactive IP based delivery to mobile devices.

From an audio perspective the move from analogue to digital television broadcast was a key milestone of the changes ahead as it introduced surround sound broadcast to the home for the first time. In addition to providing new options and a more immersive experience for the user this relatively incremental change of adding extra audio channels introduced new challenges for audio production.
