Appendix Theory of Elasticity

It was pointed out elsewhere in the text that the stress at any point of a body under external forces can be found by anyone of the following methods, though some methods fail due to geometry of the body and load conditions. The Stress Analysis methods are mentioned here.

  1. Strength of material:

    The method makes many assumptions regarding geometry and load and does not take care of abrupt changes in cross-section. Shoulders in shaft, keyways, holes in plates, notches in bars are not considered. This is the approach followed in present text, “Mechanics of Solids”.
