16 Deformation of Plates
The deformation of thin plates is considered here. Plates are assumed to be thin when their thickness is very small compared to their other two dimensions in their plane. Deformations and strains are assumed to be small and the material of the plates is isotropic linear elastic.
16.1 Stresses and Strains of Bent Plates
Plates, when bent, develop a transition from one side to the other from tension to compression and thus contain a neutral surface. If homogeneous, this neutral surface may be assumed to pass through the middle of the plate thickness (see Fig. 16.1).
