Multi Degrees-of-Freedom Systems

4.1 INTRODUCTION

Most engineering systems are continuous and, have in theory, infinite degrees-of-freedom. However, as shown in previous chapters, many of them can be idealized as discrete spring–mass–damper system with reasonable accuracy. Whereas continuous systems require solution of complex partial differential Equations, modelling them by a single or two degrees-of-freedom system greatly simplifies the study of their behaviour/response to the given perturbation force. One may also note and appreciate the fact that no closed form solutions exist for many partial differential Equations.
