(I) BASICS
Matrix is a rectangular array of numbers. The array may consist of m rows and n columns enclosed in brackets. Such an array is called m by n matrix. A matrix [A] consisting of m rows and n columns is written as
In the above form, the numbers a ij are called the elements of the matrix A. The first subscript i denotes the row and the second subscript j denotes the column in which the element aij appears. The matrix is called square matrix when the number of rows m is equal to the number of columns n (m = n). Such a matrix is called a square matrix of order n.
