Chapter 6

Continuum Models

Abstract

In this chapter, we aim to develop a new van der Waals interaction model for not only the postbuckling pressure but also the prebuckling pressure between any two layers of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT). The formulas derived herein account for the dependence of the van der Waals interaction (before and after buckling) not only on the change of interlayer spacing but also on the tube radius. Hence, it is a better model and can be applied to the MWCNTs. Based on the derived formulas of van der Waals interaction, a continuum cylindrical shell model is presented to study the buckling of an MWCNT. Donnell’s shell model is applied to study the vibration of an MWCNT. The main objective is to predict the influence ...
