Autonomy and Empowerment

Many, but not all, of the people who have participated in various studies on meaningful work either work for themselves or own their own business. In addition, they all report preferring to be their own boss, to have autonomy. Of those working for someone else, one of their criteria is how empowered they will be to decide how they will work, even if they do not have the power to decide what they should work on. I see autonomy as “space” or “elbow room.” Do I have the autonomy to get my work accomplished the way I believe it should get accomplished?
