WHEN YOU ASK people why they work, their first response usually has to do with money—either the salary itself or what it can buy. When you push past the economic issue of needing to make money to live, you hear about wanting to do something worthwhile with their lives. Even if you ask people who have won the lottery or who have inherited a lot of money why they are still working, their answer usually has to do with satisfying a need to do something fulfilling. People feel good about their accomplishments, whether it’s how their home or yard looks, how they coached their children’s soccer team, or how they fixed the dishwasher without help.
