Introduction to Authentication Protocols

The authentication protocols available when setting up VPN or dial-up connections include the following:

  • PAP
  • SPAP
  • CHAP
  • MS-CHAP version 1 (MS-CHAPv1)
  • MS-CHAP version 2 (MS-CHAPv2)

SPAP and MS-CHAPv1 are no longer supported by Windows Server 2008 R2 for authentication protocols for PPP-based connections. We will continue to discuss these protocols so that you have an understanding of them for older operating systems and clients.
