Access Control List (ACL) The list of permissions to access any object, such as a file, folder, printer, Group Policy Object (GPO), security certificate, and so on. The entries in the ACL determine the level of access that a process, user, or group receives.

Active Directory The hierarchical directory service that originated with Windows 2000 and is improved with Windows Server 2003. It is designed to identify all resources on a network and allow users easy access to these resources. It also provides tight security across the network.
