8.7. Introducing the Encrypting File System

From your earlier and more basic studies of the Windows system architecture, you may remember the two overarching file systems that are used when creating an initial Windows drive partition:

  • FAT32

  • NTFS

Since the introduction of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, NTFS has become the de facto file system for use in the Windows platform. However, both Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista still support the capability to read and interpret FAT32 and earlier volumes.

Within NTFS, Microsoft supports a technology for security and encrypting data written across NTFS volumes called Encrypting File System (EFS). This has been available since Windows 2000 and is not a new technology to Windows Server 2008. ...
