4.3. Windows Internet Naming Service

Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) is used to map NetBIOS names to IP addresses. Don't be fooled by the name, though. WINS has nothing to do with the Internet. The Internet uses hostnames, not NetBIOS names. You will find WINS servers only on internal networks.

However, the use of NetBIOS names has been significantly reduced over the years since dynamic update with DNS was introduced. When dynamic update was first introduced with Windows 2000, a wave of administrators predicted we could get rid of WINS. Unfortunately, since so many applications were still expecting a WINS server out there, WINS was still needed.
