Planning the Exchange Server 2007 Server Role Deployment

Defining the Server Role Implementation Sequence

Deploying or upgrading to Exchange Server 2007 requires a great deal of planning and design. You must keep in mind several basic rules while determining the sequence of deploying server roles. The first guideline to remember is the order in which server roles should be deployed:

  • Client Access

  • Edge Transport

  • Hub Transport

  • Mailbox

  • Unified Messaging

This does not mean that all deployments will be in this order; however, most of the time it will follow this pattern not only for the initial deployment but for each location. There are a couple ways to remember this order. One is by remembering the acronym C.E.H.M.U. Another easy way is to remember that the first letter of each of the roles is in alphabetical order. Since Client Access starts with a C it is the first role that should be deployed and the Unified Messaging role, which starts with a U, is the last role that should be deployed.
