Objective 5.4: Design and Deploy for Monitoring and Reporting

Monitoring an Exchange organization falls into two general categories: availability and performance. Availability monitoring is when you configure an infrastructure to alert you in the event that some aspect of your Exchange infrastructure, from a critical service on a CAS to an entire mailbox server, fails. Performance monitoring involves being able to accurately measure how well aspects of your Exchange infrastructure are performing, from ensuring that the hard disks that host mailbox databases are not overwhelmed with input/output operations, to ensuring that critical message queues are not flooded with excess traffic.
