Skill 36 Identify and Understand the Mean, Median, and Mode
When you work with many numbers, sometimes it’s best to summarize that information in a way that tells something important about the numerical information. One common way to do that is to find the mean, median, or mode.
Mean. The mean is the average of all the numbers in a given set. You calculate the average by adding all the numbers together and then dividing by the number of numbers. Here is an example. Look at the following numbers and add them up.
12, 23, 34, 15, 30, 39, 45, 49, 50, 32
The sum of those numbers is 329. To calculate the mean or average, divide by the number of numbers. There are 10 numbers in the set. So 329 ÷ 10 = 32.9.
Here is another example.
34, 45, 35, 35, ...
