Skill 6 Identify the Feeling or Mood of the Passage
A movie can make you feel happy or sad or angry. The movie director and actors work purposely to make you feel that way. In the same way, the author of a reading passage may use words to make you feel a certain way or to put you into a certain mood. A reading passage can convey an emotion or a mood, just like a movie.
Authors use various words in their writings to evoke feelings in the reader. Surely in your various readings, you have felt happy, shed tears, been frightened, felt nervous, experienced sadness, felt triumphant, or had other feelings. You had those emotions because the author wrote in a certain way, using certain words, to make you feel “caught up in the moment.”
