Project: Assigning Materials

The first stage of texturing requires the basic assignment of materials. As discussed in Chapter 1, “Texturing and Lighting a Product, Part 1,” you can either assign a unique material to each surface or allow surfaces to share material assignments. For this scene, it's best to combine both techniques.

Because the ambulance model is composed of multiple surfaces grouped together in a hierarchy, the assignment process will present additional difficulties. For example, if you assign a material to a node that is the parent of second node, the assignment is applied to both nodes. In other words, the assignment is carried downstream in the hierarchy.
