Caustics and Blur Effects

Caustics are the effects that occur due to the concentration and focusing of light. You can see these very well in a swimming pool. There caustics will appear as rhomboid or wave-shaped patterns on the bottom or at the walls of the pool.

When Do Caustics Occur?

From this example you can already see what kind of conditions cause caustics. There must be a light source of the appropriate intensity; you must use a medium with transparent and refracting qualities; and a surface with variations, which influence the light differently, controls the shape and number of the caustics.

Thus, with a completely flat water surface without waves or other disturbances, you won't be able to see any caustics.
