A certificate authority (CA) is any entity or service that issues certificates. CAs act as guarantors of the binding between the public key and the owner’s identity information that is contained in the certificates it issues.
When using PKI for commercial communications with outside organizations, many companies will outsource this service to a commercial CA such as VeriSign. The price varies depending on encryption strength and the level of service that you purchase.
