INTRODUCTION

Peter Senge, in his book The Fifth Discipline, presents the argument for the creation of a “Learning Organization,” an organizational extension of a personal habit of lifelong learning. Although one could argue that the need to continue to learn about the world around you has been important throughout our lifetimes, it is also pretty obvious that we have experienced a period of acceleration in what we need to know to effectively run a business (or even to lead our own lives). It is certainly no surprise that this change calls for broader education and experience in a variety of disciplines for leaders; however, there is little evidence that this has been baked into business models in a postfunctional business world.
