SUMMARY

Chapter 1 outlined how large enterprises evolve over time, resulting in the political and cultural structures becoming dysfunctional, entrenched, and intransigent. Leadership, as part of the visioning process, must develop a view of an organization where these barriers to improvement are reduced through education. Going back to Deming in Out of the Crisis, we need to stop pointing the blame at “those bad executives (or workers, in his words),” while analyzing the cultural and political processes and creating a function that can help improve the decision-making process over time. This will leave the business organization with a cadre of executives who, collectively, have sufficient knowledge and experience to produce positive business results. A path to achieving this is described in the governance process presented in Part III of this book.
